LAW SOCIETY NEWS 律 師 會 新 聞 2017 Annual Conference of In-House Lawyers The 2017 Annual Conference of In-House Lawyers ("Conference") was successfully held on 29 September 2017 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Conference brought together over 400 legal counsel, directors and presidents from various sectors and industries to discuss a variety of topics that in-house lawyers were interested in. The keynote speech was given by Secretary for Justice Rimsky Yuen who shared his thoughts on several important areas concerning in-house lawyers including the changing role of in-house legal professionals, the Belt and Road Initiative as well as Hong Kong's role as a leading centre for international legal and dispute resolution. The keynote speech was followed by a panel discussion titled "Prelude: What does the Top Management Expect from the In-House Legal Team". The speakers were Mr. Lennard Yong, Regional CEO and CEO Hong Kong, FTLife Insurance Company Limited and Ms. Astor Chan, CEO and Founder, Solution in One Limited. They were joined by Council Member Chan Chak Ming as the moderator. The session highlighted what decision-makers expect from their in- house legal teams and positively affirmed that no in-house legal team would be considered by the CEO as an expensive cost centre if the business was legally well-supported. The morning session ended with the panel discussion on "Will Apology Legislation make Saying Sorry Less Difficult?". Speakers included Ms. Ada Chan, Commissioner of the Joint Dispute Resolution Strategy Office, HKSAR and Mr. Roden Tong, Deputy CEO - Hong Kong & Head of Claims, Financial Lines - Asia, Berkley Insurance Company. Mr. Michael Beckett, an experienced mediation trainer and practitioner was the moderator of the session. The panel explained the objectives, coverage, application and implications of the newly enacted Apology Ordinance, and the challenges ahead for Hong Kong having achieved the milestone to become the first jurisdiction in the Asia-Pacific region to introduce apology legislation. The first session after the lunch break, a panel discussion on "Innovation and Regulation: the Role of In-House Lawyers during the Transition to the Fintech Era", was a topic of interest to many in the era of technology-driven financial market reforms. Mr. Nelson Chow, Chief FinTech Officer, Hong Kong Monetary Authority ("HKMA"), introduced the regulatory requirements and HKMA's initiatives in promoting Fintech development in Hong Kong, whereas Mr. Leiming Chen, General Counsel & Senior Vice President, Ant Financial Services Group and Mr. Simson Chu, General Counsel, EMQ Limited, shared their views from the perspectives of an in-house practitioner on the business environment and challenges facing Hong Kong in the Fintech industry. Mr. Sebastian Ko, Regional Director, Document Review Services APAC, and Legal Counsel, Epiq Systems was the moderator.
